 Unknown. Melissa's photo is shown
age-progressed to 36 years. She was last seen at her home on August
23, 1971. Her mother, Alta Highsmith, advertised for a babysitter for Melissa in August of 1971. A woman who called herself "Ruth Johnson" (sketch at right) answered the ad and was hired. She picked up Melissa at 7:30 a.m. on August 23 and took some diapers and Melissa's pink dress and white sandals with her. She never returned with Melissa and the woman has never been positively identified. The case was reopened in 2005 at the request of Melissa's sister. |
