Circumstances of Disappearance: |
Unknown. At approximately 12:40 a.m.,
Steven was last seen leaving his residence in the vicinity of the 200
block of 4th Street in Lafayette, Indiana. He was headed toward the downtown/river area.
He has never been heard from again. Wesley Elliott Kelly (photo at right), Smith's roommate, was the prime suspect in Smith's disappearance. He stated that he and Smith got into an argument in their apartment on the day Smith disappeared and that the confrontation flared up again later on a railroad bridge over the Wabash River where Kelly struck Smith, knocking him into the water. Kelly was arrested on suspicion of murder, but was not formally charged in Smith's case until January 2010, when he was charged with murder and misdemeanor battery. He pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to 60 years in prison. Smith's body has never been found and is believed to be in the Wabash river. |
