Circumstances of Disappearance: |
Unknown. Victor's photo is age-progressed to 18 years. Shoemaker was visiting his grandfather at his home on Short Mountain, near Kirby, West Virginia with his family in May 1994. He was last seen playing with children in the woods near Short Mountain. He was last seen by his two cousins, boys aged 8 and 9. He left the group and has not been seen since. No one noticed that he had been missing until they were going back home. A thorough search by police produced no clues. Just one main road passes through the area, but it is not heavily traveled. Short Mountain is a long, relatively low mountain. There are 8,000 acres to it. Much of it is a public hunting area. Shoemaker is described as a healthy, energetic, very bright boy who listens. More than 350 volunteers, aided by heat-sensing equipment, combed the mountain for four days under the direction of the Charlottesville-based Appalachian Search and Rescue Conference, but found no sign of J.R. His case remains unsolved. |
